  East Hetton






This was a land reclamation contract and consisted of the excavation and filling of 1.2 million cubic metres of colliery shale, 200,000m³ of subsoil & 70,000m³ of topsoil. We also installed a drainage system and constructed 12,000m² of bridleway and an HDPE lined reed bed.


Easington Colliery  
Land Reclamation

• Removal of 300,00m³ of contaminated and uncontaminated colliery spoil from the cliff and beach area.
• Processed contaminated material.
• Fill area was encapsulated with 70,000m² of Bentomat covered with 800m of clay and 200m of subsoil.
• Importation of 40,000m³ of subsoil & 30,000m³ of topsoil.
• Full area seeded.








  Pickering Nook






Enablement Contract

• Removal of shallow worked coal seams.
• Excavation and double handling of 250,000m³ of material.
• Removal of 30,000 tonnes of coal.
• Site had to be compacted to house building standards.


Dawdon Colliery  
Land reclamation scheme involving breaking out buried foundations and structures. Excavation and filling of 400,000m³ of topsoil, subsoil and general material, processing of unacceptable material, crushing of concrete to 6F2 specification, grass seeding and construction of 2,000m of bridlepaths.







  A1 Climbing Bradbury to Bowburn






• Spoil arising from installation of drainage system hauled & stockpiled.
• Drainage trenches in filled with selected suitable material.
• Layers not exceeding 150mm of capping using tarmac planings.
• Layers of sub-base were spread not exceeding 150mm depth.


Chilton Bypass  
• Site clearance to remove of redundant fencing, hedging, shrubs and small trees.
• Excavation of topsoil from road corridor hauled and stockpiled.
• Bulk excavation, materials hauled to suitable fill areas and compacted.
• Suitable fill areas were spread in layers and compacted.
• 6F2 were spread in 150mm layers and compacted.








  Northside, Birtley






• Excavation of materials from the existing stockpiles, loaded into road wagons and disposed of offsite.
• Stripped topsoil and stockpiled for reuse on site.
• Excavation of existing material, deposited as suitable fill on site and compacted.
• Excavation of existing materials and loaded into road wagons for disposal off site.
• Breakout rock.
• Processed rock into 6F2 for reuse on site.


A689 Crook Bypass  
• Excavation of materials and stockpiled for reuse.
• All clean clay arising from works were stockpiled.
• 650mm depth below sub formation were excavated and recompacted.
• 200mm of the above were clay which was stockpiled to ensure that the marginally contaminated material was sealed below a capping layer.
• Two layers of Bastex Geogrid were placed at right angles to each other to improve their load carrying properties.








  Mootlaw Quarry






• Excavation of approximately 100,000m³ of overburden & placed into restoration areas including double handling – 1996.
• Excavation of 200,000m³ of topsoil, subsoil overburden. Formation of a new silt lagoon – 1999.


Seaton Meadows  
• Excavation of existing ground and hauled to stockpile.
• Exposed of existing engineered clay.
• Graded formation
• Obtained clay from stockpile or excavations to construct new clay liner between existing cells.
• Formed clay bunds.
• Laid geotextile to new clay liner.
